Recently, national coverage by the New York Post placed Abdi Daisane’s name alongside broader daycare fraud allegations happening in Minnesota. What has been lost in that coverage is an important and necessary distinction: those allegations are not about Abdi Daisane. He has not been accused of wrongdoing, nor has he been charged in connection with any fraud. For those who know his work locally, the framing was misleading and failed to reflect his long standing record of service, leadership, and accountability in St. Cloud.
Leadership in St. Cloud has never been about titles alone. It has always been about presence, about who shows up, who stays engaged, and who remains committed to the community over time. That kind of leadership is reflected in the life and work of Abdi Daisane.
Long before his current run for Minnesota House District 14A, Abdi was already an integral part of the community. Through his consistent involvement with Xidig TV’s civic engagement efforts, he has helped highlight community updates, encourage public participation, and support conversations that keep residents informed about local issues and decisions that affect their lives.
Abdi’s leadership extends far beyond media or politics. He regularly attends community gatherings across St. Cloud, from cultural celebrations and nonprofit events to public forums and small business openings. His presence has become familiar not because of visibility alone, but because of consistency and care.
That consistency has been especially visible during difficult moments for community organizations. When the CAIRO office in Midtown St. Cloud faced racist harassment and intimidation, community leaders emphasized the importance of solidarity and steady leadership.
Abdikadir Bashir, Executive Director of CAIRO, spoke publicly about the impact such incidents have on staff and the broader community. “No organization should have to change how it operates simply to feel safe,” Bashir said. He also emphasized that Abdi’s support has been consistent and long standing.
“Abdi has always been present in this community. He shows up to events, supports organizations, and stands with people consistently, not just when there is attention, but when there is real work to be done,” Bashir said.
Abdi’s public leadership journey began in 2016, when he ran for St. Cloud City Council at a time when it was still uncommon for immigrants, particularly Somali Americans, to seek elected office locally. That decision marked an important shift in civic participation and helped normalize immigrant leadership in public spaces.
For many in the community, that early campaign opened doors and changed expectations about who belongs in local decision making.
Today, Abdi is running again for Minnesota House District 14A. In his previous campaign, he came close to winning, demonstrating strong support across the district and reflecting how much the civic and political landscape in Central Minnesota has evolved.
Beyond public service, Abdi is a local entrepreneur who owns multiple businesses in St. Cloud, contributing directly to the city’s economic vitality. He is also deeply invested in helping others succeed.
He has served as a cohort trainer with the Initiative Foundation Enterprise Academy, where he worked hands on with aspiring and early stage entrepreneurs. Many participants from his cohort are now active business owners and contributors to the St. Cloud economy, creating jobs and strengthening local neighborhoods.
Abdi is also a father of three, and his responsibilities as a parent inform how he approaches leadership, with a long term view centered on opportunity, safety, and stability for future generations.
His commitment to the cultural life of the city is reflected in his board leadership with institutions such as the Paramount Theatre, where he supports arts, culture, and inclusive spaces that bring people together.
In addition to his local leadership, Abdi completed the Humphrey School of Public Affairsdation Policy Fellows Program at the University of Minnesota, a competitive year long fellowship focused on strengthening public leadership and policy understanding across Minnesota. He continues to apply that knowledge locally, ensuring that what he learns benefits Central Minnesota communities.
Abdi’s story also mirrors the broader success of the Somali community in Central Minnesota. Somali families have become homeowners, business owners, and civic leaders across St. Cloud, Waite Park, Sauk Rapids, Sartell, and St. Joseph. This growth reflects resilience, long term investment, and a shared commitment to building a future rooted in opportunity.
Abdi Daisane’s leadership is defined by consistency, by showing up across community spaces, supporting institutions, mentoring others, and remaining engaged even when leadership is difficult.
St. Cloud is fortunate to have a leader like Abdi Daisane. His work reflects the kind of leadership that strengthens communities, grows local economies, and brings people together with dignity and purpose.
At Xidig TV, we believe these are the stories that deserve to be told fully, thoughtfully, and with respect for the communities they represent.
